Local Art by Thomas Sayre
Experience bold art pieces by Thomas Sayre featured in the lobby of our hotel. The pieces were commissioned by Bellview Art Commission, and feature two main aspects of North Carolina State University. The first is a large concrete textured wall, which slices through the lobby, and is cast directly on moist North Carolina soil. This soil has been "tooled" with steel implements to be reminiscent of the patterns of our local Piedmont landscape as seen from the air. This wall speaks of the land grant origins of NCSU, the agricultural rooms of this venerable institution, and its hundred year past. To learn more about the history of our hotel and NCSU, click here.
The next piece is a 51-foot glimmering stainless piece hanging off of our hotel, and refers to the new North Carolina State University, to the cutting-edge institution that it is, successfully competing internationally as a top-rated research university. The piece is derived from shapes which depict the actual physics of how a bell produces sound when struck by its clapper. Twinkling as a landmark along Hillsborough Street, the exterior piece entitled Overtones forms a threshold to Hillsborough Street with the Bell Tower on a hotel named Bellview.
